Partnership for Immigrant Leadership and Action (PILA) works to increase immigrant civic and political activism to strengthen democracy and advance social justice. Our work is inspired by the immense contributions that immigrants make to the economic, cultural and spiritual fabric of our communities. We envision a place where all people, regardless of citizenship status, have access to basic civil and human rights, and are empowered to take action on issues that impact all of our communities.
Action Steps toward a Solidarity Economy This tool was developed for community members and Community Based Organization’s to explore concrete steps toward a more just economy based on solidarity with workers, the community, and the earth. The workshop includes a set of 11 Action Cards, each outlining specific intiative people are currently working on to achieve a more just economic structure. The Action cards outline initiatives ranging from progressive economic policies to reclaiming unused land for community food production. In small groups, participants study, discuss and analyze the cards and then report out to the larger group. Outcomes can range from consciousness raising to choosing an initiative and developing an action plan.

Theater-based Brainstorm: the Princples of a Solidarity Economy
This tool has been developed to encourage creative, grassroots participation in the discussion on: What kind of an economy do we want to create? Instead of “teaching” people the principles of a solidarity economy (that others have established), use this exercise to generate your group’s own set of guiding principles for a solidarity economy. You could then compare and contrast it with what another group has come up with. Either way, using this tool will help to ensure that participants hold genuine buy-in for the principles that are generated. Before using this tool, it is important to have had conversations/workshops on capitalism and the negative impact of our current neoliberal economic structure on low income working people. This tool is based on an assumption that we are unhappy with our current economic structure and want to work together to create a more sustainable and solidarity-based economy.

Participatory Dialogue and Analysis: The Economic Crisis
This workshop was developed for the purpose of opening up the discourse around the economic crisis to low income working class people of color. The study of economics is often confined to “experts” with degrees in economics, but the assumption behind this tool is that its audience (those who experience most heavily the consequences of economic decision-making) are actually the most qualified to discuss and analyze the current economic crisis. Furthermore, claiming the power to do so is an essential aspect of de-marginalization. The purpose behind the discussion and analysis is to inform the group’s collective and individual actions.

This tool was developed by the Partnership for Immigrant Leadership and Action (PILA) as part of Mobilize the Immigrant Vote California Collaborative (MIV) as part of their non-election year political education and voter skills training series in 2007 aimed at building the internal capacity and increasing the scale of MIV’s core 15-20 Partner organizations throughout California. This tool was developed to be used with participants who are staff representatives of organizations who work on get-out-the-vote election programs with immigrant base members and constituents. These organizational staff members who participated were committed and had experiences (whether positive or negative) engaging communities in tackling divisive issues. Many of these participants have experience these divisive issues resulting in the fragmenting of our movement by pitting vulnerable communities against one another. This workshop was facilitated with groups as small as six people to as large as twenty across California. To ensure maximum participation please adjust the time on the agenda according to the number of your workshop participants to make sure for ample time for discussion and report backs.

(View) RATING:PURPOSE:
The Toolkit contains material that PILA created during our two intensive capacity-building Mobilize the Immigrant Vote training programs, each held over several month periods in 2002 and 2004.
The Toolkit collects basic information, ideas, worksheets, sample materials, exercises and handouts from PILA’s programs that your organizations’ staff and community leaders can use to plan and implement electoral activities that are appropriate for your organizational capacity and community context. Not everything will be useful for every organization; this really is a collection of materials for your organization to pick and choose among and adapt as needed.
While the general framing of the toolkit and each of the sections is in English, all the handouts and worksheets, and a lot of the general information, are provided in English, Spanish and Chinese.
